There’s been enough horsing around with our food, and more than ever before, people in cities want honest food that is affordable, locally produced and sustainably grown.
Yet we also need to be able to see where their food comes from and understand what it takes to produce it, therefore, aquaponic systems could be of great help.
Urban farming business, GrowUp has started and successfully completed a Kickstarter campaign to build a local aquaponic farming demonstration project in London that will run throughout summer 2013, the GrowUp box.
The GrowUp “Box” is an up-cycled shipping container with a greenhouse on top. Inside the greenhouse, using vertical growing techniques (plants work to purify the water while the fish below waste fertilizes the plants above) up to 60kg of fish and 200kg of salad, without using soil, pesticides or chemical fertilizers, could be produced each year.
The shipping container also grows Tilapia, an omnivorous white fish, that gets farmed at the right stocking density so they have enough room and comfort to keep their stress levels low. By feeding the fish a vegetarian diet, aquaponic systems like the GrowUp Box can provide a sustainable source of protein, without relying on wild fish stocks.
This project is about showing that it’s possible to grow delicious sustainable food in cities by using urban space like car parks and rooftops offers opportunities for commercially viable farming.
The GrowUp Box will be open to the public over the summer, giving Londoners and visitors the opportunity to gain an insight into London’s most innovate urban farming concept. The GrowUp Box will be hosted by Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST) at the Marlborough Playground, Union Street, SE1.
